{"id":951,"date":"2016-05-24T22:16:27","date_gmt":"2016-05-24T19:16:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.livingstonespilgrimage.org\/?p=951"},"modified":"2016-08-02T04:31:17","modified_gmt":"2016-08-02T01:31:17","slug":"protecting-the-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.livingstonespilgrimage.org\/lsp-archive\/2016\/05\/protecting-the-children\/","title":{"rendered":"Protecting the Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hearing the stories from a human rights worker in the Old City of Hebron will be etched in my memory for a long time.\u00a0 One of her main job duties is accompanying young Palestinian children on their way to school as they go through Israeli police check points.\u00a0 Otherwise, the children might be questioned, intimidated, detained, or taken to jail.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_953\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-953\" class=\"wp-image-953 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.livingstonespilgrimage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_0068-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Child we saw in a refugee camp\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.livingstonespilgrimage.org\/lsp-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_0068-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.livingstonespilgrimage.org\/lsp-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_0068-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.livingstonespilgrimage.org\/lsp-archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_0068.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-953\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Child in a refugee camp<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Other dangers might include tear gas, skunk water, stun grenades, or rubber coated steel bullets.\u00a0 Seeing pictures and watching videos of these events made them very real.\u00a0 Hearing that Hebron is a test site for various types of Israeli weapons was stunning.\u00a0 But the presence of the human rights worker and the &#8220;sumud&#8221; of the Palestinians (persistence in continuing to live in Hebron) give hope for the future.<\/p>\n<p>Our group also got to experience, on a small scale, the daily happenings in Hebron.\u00a0 While viewing the city from a rooftop, we were being stared at by an Israeli army soldier from the next rooftop.\u00a0 While walking through the narrow streets of the market, we moved to the side as a group of teenage army boys and girls marched by. In order to visit the mosque, we had to go through a chilling checkpoint ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>Before visiting Hebron, our guide told us the world really doesn&#8217;t know what happens in Hebron every day &#8211; in his words, &#8220;what happens in Hebron stays in Hebron&#8221;.
